Welcoming New Life
We welcome babies to the Jewish community by giving them a Hebrew name. We most often announce this name to friends, family and community in a special naming ceremony at home or in the synagogue. This ceremony may also include rituals to welcome the baby into the Jewish covenant.
All babies can be welcomed into the Jewish covenant! Jewish boys are welcomed through brit milah (circumcision). For Jewish girls, or when circumcision is not an option, contemporary rituals of welcoming can be used, such as a footwashing ceremony, candlelighting, or wrapping the baby in a tallit – all while reciting blessings of welcome.
All babies should be welcomed and celebrated! Depending on how you are planning to raise your child, there are different options for brit and welcoming rituals that can be discussed and customised.
If you or your family are on a journey around surrogacy, IVF, and/or adoption, I am available to offer support and Jewish resources. Please reach out!
