In the worst moments of our lives, our suffering is often alleviated most by knowing we are not alone. Psalm 23 is universally recognized because it speaks to this idea: “Though I am traversing the valley of death, I have no fear, for you are with me.” These words are traditionally understood as words of faith, bringing comfort in the knowing that we are held by something greater than ourselves, even in our darkest moments.
These words can ALSO be a reminder to us of the faith we have in ONE ANOTHER. “I have no fear for YOU are with me.” Here, the YOU, is not the Divine presence, but rather the presence of those who walk next to us on our most painful journeys.
Accompanying those who are navigating the end of their life, or the life of a loved one, is something that I feel deeply called to. This is a growing area of my rabbinate, and I hope to expand these offerings in the near future.
Navigating End of Life
If you have recently lost a loved one, or if the death of a loved one is imminent, having a rabbi to guide you through the Jewish rituals of mourning can ease a lot of the stress at an already difficult time, and may provide additional comfort. Whether you are planning a traditional Jewish funeral or are thinking about having a memorial or alternative / creative / customized ritual with Jewish prayers and rituals woven in, I am here to support you and your loved ones.
I am comfortable working with individuals and families who have chosen cremation, aquamation (water-based cremation), or natural burial.
I am also available to officiate non-denominational/non-religious funerals/memorials.

One of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself and your loved ones, is the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have made and communicated decisions around what you want or don’t want to happen as you are dying and after you are gone. Making time to plan can also bring comfort in the face of uncertainty, and to help you clarify what matters most.
Although making and sharing these decisions is not always easy, I am available to help you learn, contemplate and communicate around planning for the end stages of your life, or that of a loved one.
I believe it is a mitzvah to honour the wishes of our loved ones, and to affirm a decision to end suffering (in accordance with what is legally permitted in Ontario).
As a Reform Rabbi, I am able to offer pastoral support to individuals who have chosen M.A.I.D and/or their loved ones.
This could come in the form of pastoral counselling in advance of making a decision, helping you communicate your wishes to your loved ones, working with you and your loved ones to plan for your final moments, and/or facilitating the rituals/prayers you would like to include when the time comes.
It would be my honour to walk with you on your final journey.
